Texas Podiatry Board Confirms that ALL CME Can Be Earned Via Live Streaming CME Conferences

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has confirmed what is generally accepted across the country – that podiatrists may earn up to all of their CME credits for re-licensure via Live Streaming CME Conferences. On August 4th, Steve Uecker, MPH of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, responding to an inquiry made by a TPMA member, replied that, “…if the “Internet Live Activity” is approved by CPME- it counts the same as an in-person conference, and all hours could all be completed in that fashion.”

The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), in their July 1, 2020 revision of CPME 720, “Standards and Requirements for Approval of Providers of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine1, defined an Internet Live Activity as, “An online continuing educational activity available at a certain time on a certain date and available only in real-time, just as if it were a continuing educational activity held in an auditorium. Once the event has taken place, learners may no longer participate in that activity. A webcast is an example of internet live activity.” So any Internet Live Activities like Live Streaming Conferences and Webcasts which adhere to these standards are considered by CPME the equivalent, for CME purposes, of live in-person conferences. There may be limitations on a state-by-state board basis as to whether all CME can be earned by podiatrists via Internet Live Activities, but if so, they are overriding the stated policy of CPME.
