This lecture will review the evaluation and management of acute and chronic syndesmotic injuries of the ankle. Dr. Martina Randall will discuss lateral ankle and syndesmotic repair techniques, including current operative strategies used to restore ankle stability. The session will examine factors that contribute to syndesmotic malreduction and the potential for long-term joint degeneration when instability is not adequately addressed. In addition, surgical decision-making pathways will be reviewed, with emphasis on indications for fixation versus lateral and syndesmotic reconstruction, and the roles of posterior malleolus fixation and deltoid ligament integrity in achieving optimal ankle alignment and stability.
